RESIDENCE PERMITS

Any foreigner intending to reside in the United Republic of Tanzania for investment, business, employment or any other legal activity may be issued with Residence Permit or Pass.

KEY INFORMATION TO APPLICANTS OF RESIDENCE PERMITS

  • Applicants of Residence Permits are institutions/companies/ employers registered in Tanzania except for retired persons (who can apply as individuals);
  • All applicants for Residence Permits must be made Online through the Tanzania Immigration Website (www.immigration.go.tz);
  • Before start application, Applicant is advised to read the Residence Permit Guidelines availble in the Residence Permit Portal;
  • Applications for Residence Permits Class ‘B’ and ‘C’ should made made while the prospective guest is still outside the country, except for Residence Permit Class “A”. Applicants should obtain relevant Registration Certificate or license from relevant professional boards as the case may be;
  • All applicants of Residence Permits should first obtain Work Permit from the Ministry of Labor, except those coming for other purposes such as studies, Research, attending court case and retired persons.

HOW TO APPLY FOR RESIDENCE PERMIT ONLINE

Application for e-Residence Permit should be lodged Online. Due to the nature of application and location of the applicants, applicants are advised to specify where they would like their applications to be processed, either at the Immigration Service Department’s Headquarters, the Zanzibar Head Office, Tanzania Investment Center (TIC), Export and Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) or the Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA).

PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING RESIDENCE PERMIT ONLINE

In order for the applicant to be capable of applying for Residence Permits online he/she should undergo the following procedures:

  1. Visit our web site site www.immigration.go.tz
  2. Go to e-services and select Online Residence Permit Applications;
  3. The applicant is advised first to go through the Residence Permit Guidelines available at the top left of the Residence Permit Portal, where HE/SHE will be able to understand the types of Residence Permits, general and specific requirements for Residence Permits etc;
  4. In order for the applicant to proceed with Residence Permits application he/she must first create an account. The applicant should click where it is written create account and he/she will be able to fill the e-mail, mobile number, telephone number, postal address and password.
  5. When the account is created the applicant can access the application form, see the place where he/she can attach documents, see all the directions of how to go through online application and make an application;
  6. Once an application has been approved and an applicant has been notified on the approval of the same, he/she is required to pay the prescribed fee within sixty (60) days. Failure to do so within the specified period, application will cease to have effect pursuant to Regulations 29 of the Immigration Regulations, 1997;
  7. After payment the applicant will receive a Residence Permit Enrolment Notification, which requires the applicant to report to the nearest Immigration Office for finger print and photo capture (enrollment process);
  8. h) Once the enrolment process is done the applicant will wait for his/ her Residence Permit processing and issuance within a week;
  9. Where it happens the application has a query (ies) the applicant will be notified ONLINE (through the Residence Permit System) to rectify so that the application can proceed.

TYPES OF RESIDENCE PERMIT

There are three main types of Residence Permits, which are Residence Permit Class A, B and C. These types may be splited into various other cattegories depending on the scale, industry or holder's designation/Occupation.

Residence Permit Class 'A'

Residence Permit Class 'B'

Residence Permit Class 'C'

 

RESIDENCE PERMIT CLASS A

May be granted to a person who intends to enter or remain in Tanzania and engage on self-employed investment in the field of prospecting and Mining, Agriculture and animal husbandry, profession and Consultancy Services, Professional Arts, Manufacturing and Processing, Larger scale Investment and Trade, Hospitality Industry and related activities, Information Technology and IT activities, Transport and Linguistics, Construction Industry, Real Estate Industry and other Investments.  The applicant can apply electronically to the Immigration headquarters, Zanzibar head office, Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), Export Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) and Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority (ZIPA)

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RESIDENCE PERMIT CLASS ‘A’

  1. Dully filled online application
  2. Application letter
  3. Work Permit issued by Labour Commissioner (Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar)
  4. A Copy of National Passport (With validity of not less than six months)
  5. Passport size photograph,
  6. One full size photograph,
  7. Registration Certificates from Relevant Authorities (in case the Business requires Authorization from specific Regulatory Authority),
  8. Certificate of Incentive (in case the business or project has been registered with Tanzania Investment Centre - TIC or Zanzibar Investment Promotion Authority – ZIPA and EPZA),
  9. Board Resolution i.e. Extract of the Board Meeting resolving to appoint the applicant as a Director (where the applicant is not among the first Director),
  10. Memorandum and Articles of Association or Extract from Registrar showing Company shareholders, share distribution and nominal capital of the company
  11. Certificate of incorporation or Certificate compliance or Business Name Registration or Certificate of change of name
  12. Valid Business license,
  13. Certificate of registration for Tax payers (TIN),
  14. Valid tax clearance certificate,
  15. Tax payment slips,
  16. Lease agreement or Certificate of Occupancy,
  17. List which shows company assets,
  18. Physical Verification Visit Report (PVV) where necessary*
  19. Company Current Bank Statement where necessary

VALIDITY OF RESIDENCE PERMIT

The maximum validity of any class of Residence Permit will not exceeed two years, and it may be renewable. Indeed, the validity of Residence Permit may depend on:

  • Employment contract;
  • Validity of licence issued by relevant professional Boards;
  • Validity of Work Permits;.

STUDENT AND MIGRANT PASS

There are two categories of Student Pass which are:

  1. Student Pass 1- This is issued to persons studying in approved training establishments including children of persons legally residing in the country who are above the age of majority.
  2. Student Pass 2- This is issued to children of persons legally residing in the country who are below the age of majority and have not been endorsed in their parents residence permits studying in approved training establishments including kindergarten, primary and secondary schools and other higher learning institutions

The following are the requirements to be submitted with the application:

3. TIF1 Forms in duplicate duly filled in
4. Data sheet
5. Copy of passport authenticating nationality and validity of passport (all pages)
6. Academic certificates
7. Birth certificates
8. Copy of valid Residence Permit/Exemption Certificate of parents or guardian
9. Evidence of sponsorship/scholarship
10. Parent consent if under guardian
11. Original permit (for replacement application)
12. Admission letter/Joining instruction
13. Letter of approval from Ministry of Education for Intern student
14. Four passport size photographs
15. Introduction letter from the institution
16. Any other necessary document as required by Commissioner General of Immigration

NB: All copies should be certified.

MIGRANT PASS

This Pass is issued to persons of African descents from bordering countries or any other person as may be prescribed under the Regulations; who migrated into the United Republic of Tanzania before 1972 and continues to reside without having a passport or identification of any other country. The following are requirements:

SN. DOCUMENTS  TO BE SUBMITTED FOR MIGRANT PASS
1. TIF1 Forms in duplicate duly filled in
2. Data sheet
3. Four passport size photographs
4. Introduction letter from the institution the Ward Executive Officer
5. Recommendation Report from the District/ Ward or Village Security Committee
6. Any other necessary document as required by Commissioner General of Immigration

NB: All copies should be certified.

WHERE/ HOW TO LODGE APPLICATION

Application for Student and Migrant Pass may be lodged at Immigration Services Department, Kurasini Dar Es Salaam or at the Zanzibar Immigration Head Office. All applications from Regions must start from Regional Immigration offices, failure of it the application will not be accepted.
