Privacy Statement – KaribuPass

Last updated: 07th October 2025

Thank you for downloading the “KaribuPass” mobile application, which has been authorized by Department of Immigration to streamline and expedite entry into the United Republic of Tanzania (URT).

In order to enter the URT, you are required to provide travel document data, flight information, photos of you and your traveling family members, and responses to KaribuPass inspection-related questions prior to entering the United Republic of Tanzania. Your information will be cross-referenced with data maintained in Immigration Department’s other data sources.

This privacy policy explains how Immigration Department’s Electronic Border Management Control (eBMC) Services handles your personally identifiable information (PII), once it is received from the KaribuPass. Using KaribuPass to enter the URT is voluntary. It provides international travelers and returning residences with an alternative approach to traditional methods of submitting the required entry information to the Immigration Department during the border inspection process. If you choose not to submit your information, you will be unable to use the KaribuPass application. You may instead proceed directly to other means for entry to URT through the Immigration services.

Purpose

This Privacy Statement sets out the principles governing the collection, processing, storage, and disclosure of personal data through the Mobile Application for entry into the United Republic of Tanzania (“KaribuPass”), in accordance with applicable international and national legal frameworks, including ICAO standards, and relevant local legislation.

 Categories of Data Collected

Immigration Department collects the below information from travelers seeking to enter URT in order to confirm the traveler’s identity, residence status and citizenship, establish whether the traveler is admissible into the URT, and facilitate Immigration Department’s enforcement of URT laws;

  • Personal Identification Data: Full name, date of birth, gender, nationality, passport/ID details.
  • Travel Data: Flight numbers, itineraries, booking references, seat assignments, baggage details.
  • Contact Data: Telephone numbers, email addresses, emergency contacts.
  • Technical Data: Device identifiers, IP addresses, operating system details, and usage logs.

KaribuPass allows the traveler to voluntarily store PII (e.g., surname/last name, given name/first name, date of birth, sex, nationality/citizenship, passport number, passport country issuing authority, and passport date of expiration) securely within the KaribuPass traveler’s profile on their own devices for future travel.

Legal Basis for Processing

Processing of personal data is conducted under the following legal bases:

  • Compliance with legal obligations under international aviation and border security regulations.
  • Performance of tasks carried out in the public interest, including border control, immigration, and security screening.
  • Legitimate interests of aviation stakeholders in ensuring operational integrity and fraud prevention.

 Data Sharing and Disclosure

Personal data may be disclosed to:

  • Government and Border Control Authorities (immigration, customs, law enforcement).
  • Airline Operators and Aviation Partners for compliance and operational purposes.
  • Authorized Service Providers under contractual safeguards ensuring confidentiality and data protection.

No personal data will be sold or commercially exploited.

Immigration Department of Tanzania takes the security of all PII very seriously. We take precautions to maintain the security, confidentiality, and integrity of the information we collect through the KaribuPass mobile application. KaribuPass employs industry‑standard safeguards, including:

  • End‑to‑end encryption of data in transit and at rest.
  • Role‑based access controls and multi‑factor authentication.
  • Continuous monitoring, audit logging, and incident response protocols.

 Data Retention

Data is retained strictly in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements. Retention periods vary by jurisdiction and are aligned with ICAO and national mandates.

Data Subject Rights

Where applicable, individuals may exercise rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, and data portability, subject to legal limitations. Complaints may be lodged with the competent supervisory authority.
